Flipping Its Dish
"You had better give that dog a drink, she's walking about with her dish in her mouth"
"A drink that's a good idea, do we have any?"
I have always encouraged Molly to fetch her dish when she is given food or water, simply by having her hold her dish and carry it to the kitchen before filling the dish with either food or water. Like all dogs, she has one for water and another for food, so now before I feed her, she is sent to collect her dish, which is kept in the garden, and since she knows that this means food she is always keen to fetch it. Her water dish is kept in the kitchen, and always has water in it, but should she require more she is told to fetch that too, even if it is only a few feet to the kitchen sink. Just remember to take the size and shape of the dish into consideration before purchasing it, for should you wish to teach your dog to do this, you will have to ensure that the dish is light enough for it to carry, and that it can hold it without difficulty
Having your pet fetching its dish, and flipping one which is turned upside down is always a fun thing to watch each time it is told to fetch its dish, and very soon it will be able to identify and return with either its food dish, or when instructed its water bowl, until it will return with whatever dish that is required to be filled, such as when it is hungry or thirsty without you prompting it. Just follow the simple instructions in the book to teach your pet to achieve this.
